One of spiritual highlights of the year in the Westerville community is the Westerville Area Ministerial Association’s Good Friday participation. It is an (unfortunately increasingly) rare privilege to have the opportunity for such a public witness to the true meaning of Easter. There are two components:
This is a procession up State Street as we follow “Jesus” carrying His cross. We will meet at Cornerstone Community Church, 233 S. State Street (just north of Bishop Drive/post office stoplight) at 11:15am on Friday. You can come with your family, by yourself or with people from your church. Some dress in costumes (it was a powerful experience even for our young children growing up), and speak or act out some drama (Roman Officials, “opponents” or “followers” of Jesus or just period costumes) and others just walk along with the crowd. We’d like to go over details and pray before we get started, then leave the church around 11:30 to pace ourselves so that we arrive at Church at the Messiah, 51 N. State Street as close to 12 noon as possible. The closer to Uptown we get, the more people there usually are. Just your presence in the procession will be a witness to so many people – even if they’re just driving by. It is a solemn walk and we encourage you to pray for those watching, that the message of Easter would become more real to them than ever before. Once we get to the end of the procession, folks with specific roles in the drama will enter the Church of the Messiah and but only Jesus walks up the main aisle in the sanctuary and out through the back left door. You are welcome to join the community worship service at that point if you can stay.
Community Good Friday Service, 12 noon @ Church of the Messiah UMC, 51 N. State Street:
This is an ecumenical, multi-denomination service that lasts less than an hour. Several area ministers and representatives have a role in the service, with a combination of scripture, prayer and a blend of musical worship. There is an offering taken for Westerville Area Resource Ministry (WARM). It truly is a blessing to have so many of our churches participate in unity as we remember what is MOST important, the work of Jesus .on the cross on our behalf.
